Learning Objective(s): Students will apply critical reading annotation techniques, in order to develop a strong and nuanced understanding of an academic text. Students will recognize key concepts, arguments, and rhetorical strategies within a text, in order to effectively incorporate evidence from the text in their own writing.

Materials: Critical Reading Annotation Exercise – Instructions for Students (CriticalReadingAnnotation-StudentInstructions), academic texts to be analyzed

Time: a single class period with additional practice throughout the course
