Introduction:

What we have to do... is to find a way to celebrate our diversity and debate our differences without fracturing our communities. Hillary Clinton

Equity and inclusion play significant roles in an individual's career development and success in several ways. Equity and inclusion are principles that promote fairness, diversity, and belonging in all aspects of society, including the workplace. Equity means that everyone has access to the same opportunities, resources, and support systems, regardless of their background, identity, or status. Inclusion in the workplace is an environment where individuals feel respected, valued, and empowered. It is essential to create a diverse and superior workplace environment that reflects the full spectrum of human experiences and perspectives and removes systemic barriers and biases that may hinder the advancement and opportunities of marginalized groups.

On an individual level, understanding cultural differences and being able to embrace equity and inclusion in society and in the workplace is a meaningful experience. Cultural awareness is being cognizant of one’s culture and the culture of others. Knowing and being aware of different cultural norms and symbols can enhance an individual’s career.

Section 6: Submission Assignment

Submission Assignment:

Attend one event or film from a Hostos Cultural Event.  For example, there are many events related to Hispanic Heritage Month activities at Hostos, or another event related to cultural diversity (ask me if you’re not sure it’s relevant).  Events are publicized on the Hostos website and through emails sent to students from the Office of Academic Affairs. You can also attend a cultural event in the community.

During the event, take notes! You are to write a 1-page summary (2-3 paragraphs, typed, 12-point font) of the event and what you learned. Your summary should include the following:

  • The title of the event and the date/time.
  • What was the event about?
  • Who was speaking/leading the event?
  • What did you learn about?
  • Why is it important to learn about this topic for understanding cultural diversity?
  • How did this event help you understand the experiences of other people?  Or of your own background and culture?
  • Why do you think it is important to understand the experiences of people who might be different from you in the workplace?
  • Is there something you learned that might help you in your career or at a job site?

Submit your assignment in the Brightspace location designated by your professor.
