Module 8: The Art of Teaching Reading and Writing & Developing Personal Writing Skills

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to develop an awareness of the summary of each module and name of the standards formally assessed in each module.
Students will be able to identify the scaffolding techniques and routines for ELLs based on recent research on effective instructional methods for supporting ELLs.
"Students will be able to define what it means to presume competence in the learning potential of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and discuss the significance in doing so identify common barriers to literacy learning that often exist in classroom settings for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and describe ways to remove these barriers;
and discuss evidence-based ways to instruct students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency."
Students will be able to think, learn, and understand more about the content area of language arts for young children through enhancement of their own writing skills.
Students will be able to identify preliminary, intermediate, and advanced search techniques

Foundational Reading and Language Standards Resources Package for Grades 3-5
The Foundational Reading and Language Standards Resources Package for Grades 3–5 is designed with three purposes: to articulate the research base for instruction regarding reading foundations standards; to point teachers to where that instruction lives “within the modules”; and, most important, to offer teachers options about how to organize an additional literacy block to comprehensively address these standards beyond and alongside the module lessons.(8 Modules)

American Institutes for Research Scaffolding Instruction for ELLs: Resource Guide for ELA–1 Overview The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2010) reflect the knowledge and skills that all students, including English language learners (ELLs), need for success in college and careers. This resource guide is intended to explain and demonstrate how ELLs can be supported in meeting the New York State P–12 Common Core Learning Standards (NYS CCLS), New York State’s version of these standards.

Literacy Instruction for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Chapter 9 Steps to Success
This chapter addresses research-based literacy instruction for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It begins with a discussion of these disabilities, highlighting some common impairments that exist across such disability labels which can make literacy learning a challenge. Examples are provided that outline ways to address literacy skills, specifically in the area of reading.

We’ve learned that the writing process is a series of flexible steps that help you break a large project into smaller, bite-size pieces. Research is also a process. It’s not something that can be accomplished well in one single step, but rather done in stages, with time for reflection and analysis in between. The first part of that process is simply knowing where to look, and that’s what we’ll explore in the following pages.
Research Process: Source Analysis, Module 4 Basic Reading and Writing
Good researchers and writers examine their sources critically and actively. They do not just compile and summarize these research sources in their writing, but use them to create their own ideas, theories, and, ultimately, their own, new understanding of the topic they are researching. Such an approach means not taking the information and opinions that the sources contain at face value and for granted, but to investigate, test, and even doubt every claim, every example, every story, and every conclusion. In this section you’ll learn about analyzing sources and how to utilize the C.R.A.A.P test to verify that your source is useful and relevant.
