Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to review the Core Knowledge Language Arts Listening and Learning Strand designed to help students build the background knowledge and vocabulary critical to listening and reading comprehension.
Students will be able to master punctuation, mechanics, capitalization, and spelling as a foundation for teaching children the same.
Students will be able to discuss six rules of spelling.
Students will be able to apply the rules of capitalization and writing mechanics to lesson plans on how to teach children the same.

Core Knowledge Language Arts Listening and Learning Strand, NYSED
he Core Knowledge Language Arts Listening and Learning Strand is designed to help students build the background knowledge and vocabulary critical to listening and reading comprehension. The decoding skills needed for future independent reading are taught separately in the Core Knowledge Language Arts Skills Strand. The two strands complement each other, building the requisite decoding and comprehension skills that comprise fluent, mature reading.

Kindergarten: Skills Unit 6 Assessment and Remediation Guide., NYSED
Instruction from the Kindergarten Assessment and Remediation Guide will be most effective when used in either one-on-one or small group settings. Learning is optimized when instruction is facilitated by a teacher with expertise related to literacy instruction. Small teacher-to-student ratios maximize individual learning, particularly through increased opportunity for immediate (reinforcing or corrective) feedback for each student.
Punctuation, Mechanics, Capitalization, and Spelling, Chapter 2 Style for Students Online
This chapter is about habit. As Samuel Beckett once noted, "Habit is the ballast that chains the dog to his vomit.” It is amazing how consistently we repeat the exact same little errors out of mere habit. However, we can tackle these habits by identifying them as patterns and writing with an eye for them. As a graduate student, I once misspelled the word "separate” (using an "e” in the middle) 16 times on an exam. My professor circled the offending letter each time and glibly noted, "I wish you could spell better.” His chiding cured me, and (knock wood) I have not misspelled "separate” since.
