DEN 122 - Oral Microbiology - Textbook

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate, by both written examination and during clinical practice, a clear understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology and structural and functional alterations that result from the disease processes.

  2. Define key terms from each module.

  3. Discuss the major classifications of microorganisms and their distinctive characteristics, physiology and pathogenicity.

  4. Describe the relationship between host, agent and the environment in the initiation and progression of human disease.

  5. Demonstrate knowledge of infectious diseases, the pathogenicity of microorganisms and modes for disease transmission to the selection of methods for control or prevention of the spread of disease in a the Hostos Dental Hygiene Patient Care Facility.

  6. Explain the characteristics and development of a healthy oral microflora and recognize events that alter its composition.

  7. Identify specific microbes which initiate and facilitate the progression of oral/dental diseases (dental caries, periodontal disease, oral cancer).

  8. Author an evidence-based scientific manuscript on a topic related to oral microbiology.​
