DEN 122 - Oral Microbiology - Textbook

Module 4 Learning Objectives

After completing this module, students will be able to:

  1. Define acquired pellicle and discuss the significance and role of the pellicle in the maintenance of oral health.
  2. Describe the different stages in biofilm formation and identify the changes in biofilm microorganisms as biofilm matures.
  3. Different between the types of soft and hard deposits.
  4. Recognize the factors that influence the accumulation of biofilm calculus, and stain.
  5. Describe the dental caries disease process.
  6. Identify bacteria involved in the caries disease process.
  7. Identify fluoride and non-fluoride caries preventive agents.
  8. Review Caries Management by Risk Assessment and discuss recommendations for each category.
  9. Define the term biofilm and explain the advantages to a bacterium of living in a biofilm.
  10. Define coaggregation and explain its significance in bacterial colonization of the tooth surface.
  11. Define quorum sensing and explain its significance in coordinating and regulating microbial behavior and growth.
  12. Discuss the evolution of hypotheses to explain the role of bacteria in periodontal disease and how current hypotheses are distinct from the Nonspecific Plaque Hypothesis and the Specific Plaque Hypothesis.
  13. Explain the role of the host response to bacterial metabolism.
  14. Identify the risk factors for periodontal disease and dental caries.
  15. Describe the infectious disease process and prevention of disease transmission.
  16. Describe and identify transmissible diseases that may pose a risk to patients and dental healthcare personnel.
  17. Explain the rationale and techniques for exposure control.
  18. Describe procedures to prepare, clean and disinfect the treatment area.

  • Achieving pH Neutralization
With a long history of providing safe and effective oral health care products, Church & Dwight is dedicated to advancing oral health. As part of this vision, we strive to offer dental professionals the research and education they need to stay up to date on the provision of care. Church & Dwight—with its long-standing and trusted oral care solutions—is proud to provide an unrestricted educational grant in support of this continuing education article, “Achieving pH Neutralization,” by Martha McComas, RDH, MS. This important paper will ensure clinicians are well prepared to help their patients support remineralization and prevent dental diseases. We hope you find it helpful in your quest to provide individually tailored care to each of your patients.

  • Periodontal Disease & Overall Health: A Clinician's Guide
"This textbook summarizes and puts into context the current information on periodontal disease and systemic disease together for students of dentistry and medicine."

  • Anxiety, Depression, Stress, and Oral Health
"Anxiety, depression, and stress have also been linked to poorer oral health status and treatment outcomes. This relationship has been linked to the alterations that stress may induce on the immune system. Additionally, adequate treatment and antidepressant agents have anti-inflammatory functions that may serve to improve outcomes during periodontal therapy, but their adverse effects on salivary flow may impact caries rates. Because of the high prevalence of anxiety and depression in the population and the importance of adequate treatment for oral and overall health outcomes, identification, screening, and referral of at-risk patients seen in the dental office is a critical part of ensuring overall patient wellness. This course seeks to identify risk screening tools to assess anxiety and depression in the patient population seeking dental care and to evaluate the link between these common mental health disorders and oral health."

  • Infection Prevention & Control in Dental Settings
"This page lets you view the content of the Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings: Basic Expectations for Safe Care document online. [This includes]: Infection prevention program administrative measures[;] Infection prevention education and training[;] Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette[;] Updated safe injection practices." Caries Process and Prevention Strategies: The Agent

"This is part 2 of a 10-part series entitled Caries Process and Prevention Strategies. Dental caries is a multifactorial, infectious disease affecting a significant percentage of the population. This course describes the etiology and pathways of progression of dental caries, including an in-depth review of the role of dental plaque and oral bacteria."

How Bacteria "Talk"

"Bonnie Bassler discovered that bacteria 'talk' to each other, using a chemical language that lets them coordinate defense and mount attacks. The find has stunning implications for medicine, industry -- and our understanding of ourselves."
