Module 2: The Eighteenth Century World and Changing Conceptions of Rights in British North America

Learning Outcome

  • To understand economic transformations taking place in colonial America as a result of the entrenchment of slavery and the reorganization of household economies.

Isaac Royal, standing, and his family, young women and a child seated, all posed for a portrait in formal clothing

Isaac Royall and his family, seen here in a 1741 portrait by Robert Feke (modified), moved to Medford, Massachusetts, from the West Indian island of Antigua, bringing enslaved people with them. They were an affluent British colonial family, proud of their success and the success of the British Empire.
