Energy Sources and Air Pollution

"Energy for lighting, heating and cooling our buildings, manufacturing products, and powering our transportation systems comes from a variety of natural sources... Each of these types of energy can be defined as renewable or non-renewable."

Energy

Energy is central to our modern economy. For the past 150 years, we have improved our well being and prosperity through the mining and burning of fossil fuels. But many environmental problems have accompanied this. This chapter examines fossil fuels and the prospect of renewable or low-carbon energy.

Sustainable Human Energy Management

Current patterns of energy use (especially fossil-based fuels) raise serious concerns for three reasons - the finite natural reserves of such energy; its detrimental effects on the global environment and the threat to long term sustainability.
