Module 1: Introduction to Early CHildhood

Objective: Students will be able to describe language development in early childhood.

Early Childhood Development (Video Transcript)
Humans, especially children, have an amazing capability to learn language, and several theories exist to explain language development.

Module 2: Physical Development in Childhood

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to summarize the overall physical growth during early childhood, 2) Students will be able to identify examples of gross and fine motor skill development in early childhood, and 3) Students will be able to identify nutritional concerns for children and examine nutritional content in popular foods consumed by children in early childhood.

Physical Development in Early Childhood
Children in early childhood are physically growing at a rapid pace. If you want to have fun with a child at the beginning of the period, ask them to take their left hand and use it to go over their head to touch their right ear. They cannot do it.

Module 3: Cognitive Development

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to describe the growth of structures in the brain during early childhood, and 2) Students will be able to define preoperational intelligence and explain theory of mind.

Cognitive Development
Early childhood is a time of pretending, blending fact and fiction, and learning to think of the world using language. As young children move away from needing to touch, feel, and hear about the world toward learning some basic principles about how the world works, they hold some pretty interesting initial ideas.

Module 4: Psychosocial Development

Objective: Students will be able to explain Erikson's stages of psychosocial development for toddlers and children in early childhood.

Psychosocial Development
Early childhood is a time of forming an initial sense of self. A self-concept or idea of who we are, what we are capable of doing, and how we think and feel is a social process that involves taking into consideration how others view us.

Module 5: Childhood Stress and Development

Objective: Students will be able examine concerns about childhood stress and development.

Childhood Stress and Development
What is the impact of stress on child development? Children experience different types of stressors. Normal, everyday stress can provide an opportunity for young children to build coping skills and poses little risk to development.
