When a book is "challenged", that means some individual or group is trying to get a library--usually a public library or a school library--to remove a book from its shelves. Book challenges have become increasingly frequent, and nationally coordinated, and well-funded. Books by and about LGBTQ people, that have protagonists of color, and/or include critiques of racism have been disproportionately targeted.
