Lab 3: Reaction Kinetics: Initial Rates via the Iodine Clock Reaction

  • Determine the rate law of a reaction using the Method of Initial Rates (Week 3)

  • Determine the activation energy of the reaction (Week 4)

  • Examine the effect of a catalyst on the reaction rate  (Week 4)

Lab 4: Le Châtelier’s Principle

  • Observe the effect of changing reactant/product concentration and temperature on chemical systems at equilibrium 

  • Use Le Châtelier’s Principle to explain the shifts

  • Study the effects of a strong acid on the solubility of different precipitates 

  • Study the common-ion effect


Lab 5 - Week 6 & 7

Lab 5: pH Measurement and its Applications

  • Measure the pH of various solutions using pH indicators and meter (pHmeter only) (Part A, B)

  • determine the value of Ka for an unknown acid by measuring pH (Part C) or by

  • performing a pH titration (Part D)

  • create and study the properties of buffer solutions (Part E)

Lab 6 - Week 8

Lab 6: Weak Acids, Weak Bases and Salts

  • Measure the pH of weak acid, weak base, and salt solutions

  • Calculate he Ka and Kb values 

  • Rank the weak acids and the weak bases according to relative strength


Lab 7 - Week 9

Lab 7: Properties of Systems in Equilibrium –  Le Châtelier’s Principle

  • Observe the effects of changing the solution volume and temperature on the solubility equilibrium 

  • Find a reagent that will shift the acid-base equilibrium (optional - professor's discretion)

  • Test the effects of changing the volume and temperature on the complex ion equilibrium


Lab 8 - Week 10

Lab 8: Determination of Kc for a Complex Ion Formation

  • Find the value of Kc for formation of a complex ion by using a spectrophotometer

  • Confirm the stoichiometry of the reaction (optional - professor's discretion)


Lab 9 - Week 11

Lab 9: Electrochemistry Lab

  • Construct 6 galvanic cells

  • Compare calculated and measured Ecells

  • Concentration and electrolytic cells (optional - professor's discretion)


Lab 10 - Week 12

Lab 10: Introduction to the Structures and Isomerism of Simple Organic Molecules - Description and Modeling

  • Construct molecules using model kits

  • Draw projection and perspective pictures

  • Find the geometry of the central atom(s)

  • Determine hybridization, angle(s)

  • Draw the structures of all isomers (if applies)

  • Understand properties and uses of synthetic thermoplastics

  • Compare the physical properties of “Big Six” plastics 

  • Identify everyday plastics by their physical properties 

  • Draw basic structures of polymers when given monomer structure
