In Spring 2017 an Inquiry Group at Hostos formed to investigate the possibilities of adopting the 12-6 academic calendar at Hostos.
Colleges using a non-traditional schedule
Knowledge decay between semesters
"Debate continues on the implications of school scheduling and its impact on student learning and learning loss, specifically over summer breaks. This paper provides the first evidence on learning loss in higher education. Students enroll in a variety of course sequences in college. Using administrative data from Clemson University, we focus on course sequences taken two semesters in a row, either fall–spring or spring–fall. Sequences taken fall–spring offer a shorter gap between courses than do courses taken spring–fall."
8 Week Semesters
Dean of Brookdale Community College considers this option. He muses "The classes would meet more hours per week, but for fewer weeks, and students would only take one or two at a time. They wouldn’t divide their attention among four or five classes, like they do now. They could focus."
Financial Aid Implications
Requirements for free tuition in NY
How will the 12/6 schedule affect students being able to meet the requirement that students be enrolled full time and take at least 30 credit hours per year?
Implications for collaboration
Tough Times Push More Small Colleges to Join Forces
"Even beyond their cultures, the two colleges face hurdles to collaborating. Academically, they are on different calendars—Carleton is on trimesters, while St. Olaf is on a 4-1-4 term calendar. "
College in Illinois Finds a Way to Help Low-Income Students Go Abroad
How can students from a campus using a trimester program, participate in outside organizations' programs (like study abroad, internships) that cater to students in schools that use the semester schedule? "Because Augustana is on a trimester system, nearly all students go overseas on programs organized by the college itself."
